Party Wall - nARCHITECTS
This interactive installation at the SoHo gallery Artists Space, created a variable boundary in the gallery, dividing visitors into different sides of the room. Party Wall allowed "neighbors" to dynamically modulate the thermal, acoustic and spatial qualities of a simple screen made with 2" thick bands of foam. In this initial prototype, proximity sensors embedded in the foam detected the presence of "neighbors" and triggered tiny servo motors. The motors exeredt tension on synchromesh pulley cables attached to the foam layers, causing variable compression and expansion, and resulting in varying apertures and densities of foam. Beyond raising issues of property and ownership in the gallery context, future iterations of Party Wall could respond to light, heat or sound, and correspondingly modulate optical, thermal or acoustic attributes of a wall. Design/Fabrication by nARCHITECTS: Eric Bunge, Mimi Hoang (principals); Nicolas Salto Del Giorgio (project architect); Jorge Pereira, Takuya Shinoda (design team); interactive consultant: Parul Vora and Jeff Weber. Partially funded by Elise Jaffe + Jeffrey Brown. Exhibition: March 9 th - April 23 rd, 2005.

Cracked Glass - Younghyun Chung
Inspired by the “Quantum Cloud” series by British sculptor Antony Gormley. I made two simple rules. 1. One click makes four cracks on the screen, like cracks on glass. 2. A new crack is limited by existing cracks. Audience made their own pictures within this framework.

We wanted to bring to the world the simplest espresso coffee maker. Espresso has been around for nearly a century and requires two very important things to extract a great drink. Pressure and water that is around 90 degrees centigrade. If the water is boiling then the coffee will taste bitter.
Stove top coffee makers are really simple but do not fulfill these 2 requirements. We figured what could be more simple than using hot water from your existing kettle and using mechanical leverage to provide pressure.

We made lots of prototypes and got to a solution which delivers a great cup of coffee really simply. Oh, another part of our strategy is to bring back a bit of ritual to coffee making. With presso you really get involved, like playing a musical instrument.
