Diller and Scofidio's Blur Building

The Blur Building was built for the Swiss Expo 2002 on Lake Neuchatel. It is an architecture of atmosphere. The lightweight tensegrity structure measures 300 feet wide by 200 feet deep by 75 feet high. The primary building material is indigenous to the site, water. Water is pumped from the lake, filtered, and shot as a fine mist through 31,500 high-pressure mist nozzles. A smart weather system reads the shifting climactic conditions of temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and processes the data in a central computer that regulates water pressure...

Lazerian Mensa Collection

Lazerian’s experimentation with plywood over the
past two years has culminated in the creation of a
new collection of furniture. Starting from a hands on
exploration of plywood, Richard Sweeney and
Liam Hopkins created a series of models with
various connecting methods, including bolting
and self-interlock. With the use of a CNC (computer
numerically controlled) router, these models were

of supporting weight...

Twister Restaurant, Kiev - The Cool Hunter

Twister is a newly opened restaurant in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The design team, Sergey Makhno and Vasily Butenko also of Kiev, work on residential and commercial interiors and architecture but we are particularly fascinated by their furniture and their sculptural approach to interiors. We wrote about one of their office projects a while ago.
In Twister, the duo has captured the upward pull of a tornado in the main two-storey dining area with furnishings that seem to hover above the floor on their super-slim legs, with light fixtures resembling rain drops, and with massive sculptural columns that are in fact crow's-nest balconies.

Camper store by TAF - IconEye

Sweden’s first Camper store has opened in Malmö, designed by TAF. The inspiration for the design came from ice cream and hundreds-and-thousands.

The unlikely source of inspiration has been used to create tables, stools and a cash desk in solid birch with legs and cross bars shaped like ice cream sticks, stained in solid pastel colours. The rest of the store is white with vanilla-coloured rubber curtains lining the walls, hiding the shop stock. The rubber curtains are a sly reference to melting ice cream...

Mestia Airport - IconEye

Jürgen Mayer H summarises the brief for the airport in Mestia, a highland townlet in Georgia's Caucasus Mountains: "Design an airport building in one day, to be built in three months, for up to 25 passengers, including a tower."

There was no airport in Mestia before this one, part of Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili's ambitious plan to boost tourism to the area. It is hoped that, with easier access, people will flock to the area – listed as a UNESCO world heritage site for its medieval monuments, churches and forts. Mayer hoped the tower of his speedily designed and constructed airport would echo Mestia's historic stone towers...
